Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites are changing the face of marketing.  In the December, 2009 issue of Entrepreneur Magazine they state:

For small businesses without the resources to explore conventional advertising options, Twitter presents a free and efficient alternative to promote goods and services directly to customers, exploiting the immediacy and intimacy that other channels simply can’t match. Recent data issued by market researcher Kelsey Group indicates that 9 percent of small businesses now wield Twitter accounts as public relations tools.

More and more, people are turning to these sites to connect with friends, get information, and even do their shopping.  According to Nielsen:

Two-thirds of the world’s Internet population visit social networking or blogging sites, accounting for almost 10% of all internet time, according to a new Nielsen report “Global Faces and Networked Places.” If data captured from December 2007 through December 2008 is any indication, that percentage is likely to grow as time spent on social network and blogging sites is growing more than three times the rate of overall Internet growth.

“Social networking has become a fundamental part of the global online experience,” commented John Burbank, CEO of Nielsen Online. “While two-thirds of the global online population already accesses member community sites, their vigorous adoption and the migration of time show no signs of slowing.”

As a business owner, you can not afford to be left out.  Connecting with others through social media puts a face on your business and allows you to reach people that otherwise would never enter your shop or find your website.

What are the main reasons business owners are not taking full advantage of these marketing strategies?

  • Don’t understand it
  • Don’t want to learn something new
  • It takes up time
  • takes time away from other productive work
  • there are other ways to reach people
  • Twitter and Facebook is just for technonerds
  • only college kids use Facebook or Twitter

Does any of this sound familiar?  If you are not promoting your business using social media, you are missing out on some big opportunities.  While social media may have it’s roots with the young; the fastest growing segment of Facebook users is 50-64 year olds. Nielsen reports “From December 2007 through December 2008, Facebook added almost twice as many 50-64 year old visitors (+13.6 million) than it has added under 18 year old visitors (+7.3 million).”
